Update on gear-reductions for Tamiya 1/16 R/C tanks 5 June 2003
From Willy / CustomRCmodels

for the true "Tanker" most of the available 1/16 tank's are way to fast .
WW II tank's didn't had the "rocket" speed as some of the today's tank's .
a Tiger I max speed was just around 38 km/hr = about 24 miles/hour,
( in some documentation's I read also around 40 km/hr = about 25 miles/hour )
with an average off-road speed from 25 km/hr = about 16 miles/hour
a King Tiger's max speed was 35 km/hr = about 22 miles/hour
a Sherman's max speed was 38 km/hr = 24 miles/hour ,
( I always thought the Sherman was faster as the Tiger I , but maybe just off-road ,
I will get me more detailed data on that )
I believe the T-34 was the fastest with 55km/hr = 34 miles/hour
anyway's , no matter if my data here is absolute corrected one thing is a fact ,
the gearing of most of the available tank-kit's is way to fast .
Tamiya's Tiger I ( with a gear-ratio from 46:1 , old type DMD drives ... )
equals to a scale speed from about 69 km/hr = 43 miles/hour .
You could say now , that why we have a throttle on our remote-controls ,
what is true , but if you run your model like the Tiger I only with 1/2 speed ,
you never get the max out of the engine-sound .
Solution , gear-reduction and slower motor's .
First the Tiger 1 with the old type DMD gearing
10 tooth motor-pinions , 46:1 original gear-ratio
as I mentioned before I can not do all the different gear-ratios stated on my website ,
since I could not get the required gears .
so far the only option for the Tiger 1 is the 120:1 overall gear-ratio .
in addition to that I can over now also a 142:1 gear-ratio , but first have to test that ,
since I am using here a 11 tooth output-gear was is quite small to be fit on an 4mm shaft .
to secure it better on the shaft I also have to glue it , since I don't trust the setscrew alone
in this case , what makes the disassembling of this gear-reduction more difficult .
so far recommended setup 120:1 and if slower speed is required the use of additional slower motor's , like the Zagi's ( I am testing right now a few different type motor's ,
results out of that to a later time )
as an additional option , the new King Tiger gearboxes can also be used in a Tiger 1
( but you have to use the gearbox-mounts / studs from the Tiger 1 gearboxes ,
or I can supply you with these studs ….)
with the use of the new King Tiger gearboxes in a Tiger 1 , more gear-ratio options are possible, see below “New King Tiger with new type gearboxes”
older King Tiger with old type DMD gearing
12 tooth motor-pinions , 37:1 overall gear-ratio
gear-ratio available so far 97:1 , if 10 tooth motor-pinions are used it's 116:1
as alternative I am testing the 11 tooth output-gear setup ( see Tiger 1 ) ,
what would give with the stock 12 tooth motor-pinions a 114:1 overall gear-ratio .
with the use of 10 tooth motor-pinions it would be 137:1
so far recommended setup 116:1 with the use of 10 tooth motor-pinions
and if slower speed is required the use of additional slower motor's , like the Zagi's
( I am testing right now a few different type motor's ,
results out of that to a later time )

recommended setup here the 120:1 to get the same speed like the older Tiger's .
right now I am testing the 136:1 with the 15 tooth output-gears
New Sherman ( Updated 6 July 2003 )
18 tooth output-gears with 12 tooth motor-pinions ( original 10 tooth )
gear-ratio 94:1 , tested true-scale speed 15.6miles / 25 km / hour
Pershing , not checked yet ……
I will post more updates as soon testing is done …….
New item:
Chassis re-enforcement-plate for Tiger 1 and old and new King Tiger
A known problem with the wear of the old style gear-boxes is the design of the gearboxes, and the relatively flimsy chassis .
By stiffen the chassis the life-expectance of these gear-boxes can be extended .
For the old style gear-boxes is a gear-box-re-enforcement-kit available ,
( as I used it in my old King Tiger , see photos ).
Since there is nothing for the new style gear-boxes , I made chassis-re-enforcement-plates
For the Tiger 1 and old and new King Tiger .
The chassis-plates bolt to the tank from the bottom with counter-sunk-screws , what gives a smooth bottom without having any screws sticking out .
These plates are made from 1/8 ( 3mm ) Alloy and have all holes to mount any gear-box in any tank , means you could use new King Tiger gearboxes in a Tiger 1 …..
Every hole from the original chassis are in these plates plus the extra holes for the different type gear-boxes…..
( see photos )
